Portola 2026 Just Dropped Its Festival Lineup

Our take on why September can't come soon enough.

Sometimes it does feel for the past few years that most festival lineups these days were assembled by a Spotify algorithm. You get your obligatory pop headliner, a couple legacy acts for the older crowd, and a mid-tier electronic section that reads like a randomly shuffled playlist. However, this year’s Portola festival knocked it out of the park.

When the lineup dropped, it was an immediate stare at your phone and text all your friends. Two full days at Pier 80, September 26 and 27, and the bill reads less like a festival poster and more like someone's meticulously curated lineup.

Saturday Is a Pop Lovers and old school EDM heads

Robyn. Dog Blood. Saturday night at Portola is going to be a moment.

There is no artist on earth who makes a crowd feel more alive than Robyn. She is one of the greatest live performers of our generation. She is not just a pop star, but an artist who understands that a concert is a communal emotional experience. 

Now Robyn will pull at our pop heart strings, but then there is Dog Blood. Skrillex and Boys Noize, reuniting for the first time since 2019, in what's reportedly their only performance of the year. Saturday is carrying two different once-in-a-generation sets before the night is even over.

Some of Saturday's support includes another legacy act, Fatboy Slim who is still one of the most purely fun live acts anywhere. How will everyone be feeling when "Praise You" comes on with the fog rolling in off the Bay? This is an experience that can’t be mixed. Soulwax belongs on every festival stage and Skepta is always worth seeing. Max Styler threw down in the Yuma tent at Coachella this year so it would be a treat to see him in the Warehouse. DJ Shadow performing in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Endtroducing is the kind of historically significant set that you'll tell people you were there for.

The Spice Girl era is fully a rave artifact now with Mel C is DJing. It is impossible to not be onboard with that since other fellow 2000s pop girlies Nelly Furtado and Christina Aguilera have taken the Portola stage.

Sunday Goes Even Deeper

Swedish House Mafia closing out the weekend is the kind of headliner that makes the festival accessible to people who maybe aren't as plugged into the deeper electronic scene. They always deliver the massive euphoric moment a festival like this deserves as its final statement.

But the acts around them? That's where Sunday gets genuinely exciting for anyone who pays attention to what's happening in music right now.

Four Tet performing live is one of the most consistently rewarding things you can see. Kieran Hebden has spent the last decade releasing music that feels ahead of the curve. His live show reflects that with patient, textured, raw emotion. Zara Larsson on the lineup brings a pop energy that fits perfectly at an outdoor stage, and her recent output has been genuinely great. Tiësto in the Warehouse will feel like an intimate setting from a legacy DJ like himself mixed with maximalist energy.

And then there are names like Overmono, horsegiirL, Kelela, Channel Tres, Daphni, etc.Artists who represent exactly the kind of forward-thinking curation Portola has built its reputation on. Every artist in their each slot means something. Careful thought out and curated. 

Despacio Makes It Perfect

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Despacio. With them making a return to Pier 80, the James Murphy and 2ManyDJs (Soulwax) immersive disco experience with its custom McIntosh speaker system will have you floored. If you've never been inside Despacio, there's genuinely no way to explain it. It's not a stage show, it's not a DJ set, it's something closer to a curated  experience in a room that vibrates. It is great that it will be running all weekend again as this will definitely get people to the grounds earlier in the day.

Portola is now five years old and this lineup feels like a victory lap. They've figured out that you can book pop headliners and underground legends on the same bill at a smaller scale than a Coachella. If you do it thoughtfully, it doesn't dilute it either, it just elevates it. The crowd that comes to see Robyn will accidentally fall in love with Four Tet or Prospa or even Oskar Med K. The heads who show up for Overmono and will stick around for Swedish House Mafia and feel the nostalgia hit differently than expected.

That's the magic of Portola.
